Reclaim the Night – Coventry
In March 2015, the Centre for Transnational Development and Collaboration (CTDC) contributed to the organisation and sponsorship of the Reclaim the Night event in Coventry. Reclaim the Night is a women-led protest and public demonstration asserting the right of all women to move freely in public spaces without fear of violence or harassment. Reclaim the Night is a women-led protest asserting that all women have the right to move freely in public spaces without fear.
The event took place on Saturday, 7 March 2015, and featured a women-only march through Coventry city centre. It began in Broadgate and concluded with a rally and celebration at Transport House on Short Street.
The aim of the event was to create a safe and empowering space for women to share experiences through poetry and spoken word. These creative expressions helped build solidarity and drew attention to ongoing gender-based violence and the need to reclaim public spaces.
The Reclaim the Night tradition began in the UK on 12 November 1977 as a protest against sexual violence and harassment. Since then, women across the UK and around the world have continued to organise Reclaim the Night marches as acts of resistance, visibility, and empowerment.
