Hikayetna: Storytelling from Syria
By Sulaiman Osman

Hikayetna—meaning “our story” in Arabic—is a powerful arts and storytelling initiative that gives voice to the human side of Syrian society. For decades, freedom of expression was absent from our collective lives. But through storytelling, we are reclaiming our voices—turning fear into hope, and isolation into connection. This independent, non-political platform fosters empathy, resilience, and solidarity among Syrians and global audiences alike.

Grounded in values of tolerance, humanity, and love, Hikayetna avoids political and religious affiliations, instead offering a space for shared experiences and mutual understanding through personal narratives, poetry, photography, and music.

Our mission is to amplify the voices of Syrians, especially those living in refugee camps—individuals too often reduced to numbers or forgotten altogether. Through this project, their stories are heard around the world, opening windows into lives that might otherwise remain invisible.

We aim to build bridges—from one heart to another—so the voices of displaced Syrians resonate globally. We believe in the transformative power of storytelling. That’s why we train young people in the art of expression, offering practical workshops and platforms for them to write, speak, and create. Storytelling becomes a tool for reflection, self-representation, and active engagement in civil society.

Hikayetna is also a space for hope. Amid displacement and destruction, we seek out stories that breathe life into the future—stories that remind us of our shared humanity and our vision for a more compassionate tomorrow. Through partnerships, outreach, and creative media, we support civil society engagement, cultural exchange, and youth empowerment.

Ultimately, Hikayetna strives to be a home for authentic Syrian voices—regardless of background, belief, or experience. By challenging the narrow portrayals often found in mainstream media, we offer a richer, more beautiful picture of Syria—one story at a time.
